Asthma - The Causes and Treatments
Along with the benefits that industrialisation has brought to humans in the
21st century, there have also been some unwelcome effects. One of these that is reaching almost epidemic
proportions is asthma. It is said that asthma affects one person in every household in the UK. Over five million
people are being treated of which over one million are children. The causes of asthma are not, even now, fully
understood. Why some people are affected whilst others are not cannot be fully explained. What is known is that
irritants that exist in the air that we breath can trigger an asthma attack in those who are susceptible. The
irritation inflames the small bronchial tubes which restrict the flow of air and life giving oxygen. Symptoms
include shortness of breath, wheeziness and tightness in the chest. This can, if untreated, give rise to a
dangerous situation which can be life threatening.
Fortunately there are medical treatments that are available which can control these extremes. Most
asthma sufferers carry some form of inhaler to either prevent inflammation of the airways or others that are
used immediatly an asthma attack occurs. The latter relaxes the muscles that surround the narrow airways thereby
allowing the the airways to open and allow normal breathing. Nebulisers generally used in emergency situations
deliver a mist of medicine via a face mask. If symptoms are severe it may be necessary to take a course of steroids
which quickly reduce inflammation of the airways.
S ome sufferers have found alternative treatments for their asthma and have reported that
colloidal silver is effective in combating the inflammation which gives rise to the condition.
Susan Millar in her report
describes how she cured her lifelong asthma affliction. The report makes for compulsive reading for anyone
suffering from this debilitating condition.
